Does your business need to have fire extinguishers? The textbook answer would be that the result of your fire risk assessment will determine your requirement. However government guidelines suggest that even a one-room shop should have at least one dry-powder extinguisher.

How many you may need and what type is dependant upon the risks within your building and its physical size. Our FETA qualified surveyors are happy to advise you in the choice of fire extinguishers for your business.

Once extinguishers are in place it is a legal requirement to have them serviced annually. Every extinguisher requires at least a basic service annually and some require extended services on five year cycles; stored-pressure extinguishers (which can be identified by the presence of a pressure gauge) require extended services every five years. CO2 extinguishers require only a basic service annually until they reach ten years at which point they need to be overhauled.
