Home Security Survey:
If you’re looking for home CCTV or an intruder alarm the first step is usually a home security survey. Many companies offer home security surveys – some more high pressure than others. It’s worth getting a few different companies to compare. We’ve compiled six ‘must ask’ questions to put to your surveyor when you’re considering getting a home security system.
1. What credentials does the business have?
You want to know the system you’re paying for will be up to standard and last the test of time. Look for a company that is ratified by the National Security Inspectorate (NSI) who offer three levels of approvals – with gold being the highest. Alternatively a company may meet SSAIB or secured by design standards.
2. How sustainable is the business?
Nobody wants home security that’s going to cost the earth. Make sure your security installer is eco conscious. They may measure their carbon footprint, offer staff training or have a green team. They might be promoting biodiversity or planting trees. Some companies might even hold credentials or follow schemes such as Investors In Environment.
3. Where is the best place for the system?
Your surveyor should discuss camera locations if you’re having a CCTV installed. There’s also the location of the recorder to consider. In the case of an intruder alarm, you’ll need to agree the location of the sensors, keypad(s) and bell boxes. They’ll explain the pros and cons of different options.
4. Will your system comply with GDPR and privacy?
If you’re having cameras installed, it’s worth considering privacy screening so as not to intrude on the privacy of your neighbours. Your surveyor should explain how privacy screening works and recommend the best places to place your cameras to ensure maximum coverage with minimum intrusion.
5. What to do about your pets?
If you have pets make sure you mention them to your surveyor so they can plan for pet friendly devices in any areas your pet will use.
6. What happens after the installation?
Once you’ve had the system installed, it’s reassuring to know that support is still available. If you forget how to use one element of the new system, or need to make adjustments after the installation what help will be available? Will the equipment be under any warranty?
