Protect what matters most – that’s the message from National Home Security Month (NHSM) this October. Each year security specialists across the country come together to help improve your home security.

Tips & Facts for National Home Security Month

According to Yale 62% of us are as concerned about home security during summer as we are winter. And whilst it’s brilliant to be security conscious all year round, it’s also useful to be in possession of the facts. Home insurers have told us again and again that burglaries spike when the clocks go back. Data also shows that there are more break ins during the hours of darkness than during daylight hours.

52% of people leave a light on as a security measure when they go out.

This is why October is selected as the best month for NHSM. It’s the perfect time to draw your attention to the security measures you have in place in your home. 62% of victims of burglary admit that not securing their home led to their burglary. Simple steps such as switching on your house alarm and ensuring windows are secured can make a huge difference to the security of your home. In fact burglars are three times more likely to target a home without a security system.

Throughout the month you’ll find advice online under the hashtag #NHSM24. Of course we tailor ours beyond the national picture, with a focus on Yorkshire & Lancashire. Our blog is updated weekly with fire and security industry news and tips, and each year we devote October’s blogs to advice for NHSM.
