The Office of National Statistics (ONS) data tells us that the timing of burglaries is changing. The latest report tells us that more burglaries are happening after dark than during daylight than before. In the year ending March 2025, 83% of domestic burglaries in ‘non connected building to a dwelling’ happened in the dark. Compared with 69% during the previous year, is a notable shift away from daylight break ins, particularly in this type of building. These ‘non connected connected building to a dwelling’ could include your garage or workshop, a garden office or gym, or it could be a barn or other outbuilding.
In the year ending March 2025, 84% of burglaries in these non connected buildings took place in the evening or overnight. This is up from 74% in the previous year.
When you’re considering your home security, it’s this type of building that can easily be overlooked. Additional buildings can either be protected under your home security system, or they may have their own stand alone system. This will depend on a number of factors including the type of system, the proximity to your house, and how you use the building.
