Are your outbuildings covered by your home security system? They’re more likely to be broken into after dark than during the day, making it crucial to protect them with a robust and effective security system.

The Office of National Statistics (ONS) data tells us that the timing of burglaries is changing. The latest report tells us that more burglaries are happening after dark than during daylight than before. In the year ending March 2025, 83% of domestic burglaries in ‘non connected building to a dwelling’ happened in the dark. Compared with 69% during the previous year, is a notable shift away from daylight break ins, particularly in this type of building. These ‘non connected connected building to a dwelling’ could include your garage or workshop, a garden office or gym, or it could be a barn or other outbuilding.

In the year ending March 2025, 84% of burglaries in these non connected buildings took place in the evening or overnight. This is up from 74% in the previous year.

When you’re considering your home security, it’s this type of building that can easily be overlooked. Additional buildings can either be protected under your home security system, or they may have their own stand alone system. This will depend on a number of factors including the type of system, the proximity to your house, and how you use the building.

CCTV To protect your outbuildings

To protect your outbuildings, it’s useful to install cameras overlooking entry and exit points. Responsive CCTV systems which alert you to the presence of someone of the driveway are particularly useful. Camera systems such as the ColorVu CCTV System offer full colour images even at night and are ideal for protecting the areas around your home and any additional buildings.

Connected Security for all your property

An intruder alarm system can easily cover your garage if it’s internal or linked to the house. Systems can be configured to leave the garage armed even when you’re at home to keep your motor protected. For adjacent buildings, signal strength tests can confirm the viability of a linked system. A building further away may require it’s own separate system for reliable security. With app control, you can view and control several systems within one app, making protecting your property easy. When armed, an alarm system would alert you instantly if your workshop or garden bar were accessed during the night.
