“There was a break in round the corner from us and the following night, my neighbour messaged me in a panic. She had an alarm system but she didn’t know how to use it. She hadn’t switched it in on years because she’d been worried about it going off accidentally.”

It’s a surprisingly common misconception that switching your alarm on could make it go off. Of course something could accidentally trigger an alarm. But if there is a problem such as a power failure, your alarm it will sound whether it’s switched on or not. If you do have an alarm, it’s really best to switch it on and use it to protect your home. Whilst the external bell will do the job of deterring criminals, this is only the tip of the iceberg. It could be bringing you so much more peace of mind.

How to prevent your house alarm going off accidentally

Some people do not use their house alarm is because they are worried about false activations. This concern can be easily mitigated in a few steps. The first step is at installation. You will find a range of options; Everything from off-the-shelf kits to international installers. Investing in professional installation is the best way to reduce the risk of false activations. Check which industry approvals your installers hold. For example Keybury are approved by the National Security Inspectorate (NSI). The NSI have differing levels and Keybury are NSI GOLD approved. Such industry bodies require installers to use approved equipment which is tested to ensure you won’t be blighted by false alarms.

Furthermore, when you have an intruder alarm installed for you, you can expect a detailed handover. This means ensuring you know how to use the system. It also means you know what to do if the alarm does go off. If you are confident in using the system you will be more likely to use it!

Thank you so much for all the trouble you went to yesterday to explain how the updated alarm system worked. I have been in and out a few times and even the upstairs setting was no problem.

Investing in a high quality professionally installed home alarm system will get you off on the right foot. But what if you already have an alarm in place?

What next?

Installation is the first step. Ongoing maintenance is the way to keep your alarm working properly and avoid false alarms for years to come. Routine servicing includes taking measurements and readings, and checking the system is working as it should. Intruder alarm back up batteries have a finite lifespan. Once this expires, you can expect false alarms. It’s a good idea to get your system serviced annually.

As with new installations, opt for a reputable recommended company with the right credentials to be able to check your system thoroughly.
