Is it time to replace your business’ fire alarm system?
You’ll be able to plan for system alterations when carrying out a renovation. However many commercial property owners forget to consider the implications of an ageing fire alarm system.
Some elements of your fire alarm system will outlive others; for example the wiring should last a couple of decades. However technology may cause you to consider panel improvements in a shorter timescale.
If your system was installed around 10 years ago then, yes, you should put plans in place to update your business’ existing fire alarm system. Whilst the wiring is likely to remain in tact, you should have smoke and heat detectors replaced.
There are many things which may trigger a fire alarm update. It could be down to repeated issues of an aging fire alarm system. It may be down to changes in the use of your building or renovations. On the other hand, it could be something external such as a change in legislation (watch this space!)
Replace Business’ Fire Alarm System Detectors
Fire Alarm manufacturers recommend that smoke and heat detectors should be replaced after 10 years. Whilst this is not (yet!) a requirement of the British standard, many other countries mandate it. Depending on where in the world you are, standards can require detectors be replaced after anything from 5 years to 12 years.
Fire alarm systems should be tested each week, and regularly serviced and checked twice per year by a competent person. This will include (amongst other checks) testing the efficacy of the detectors as well as cleaning any dust and debris from the system. After ten years all of these devices should be replaced for new. In more harsh environments, this time frame may be shortened.
