Count down to holiday security
Are you on a holiday countdown? Here’s 10 steps to get your home security holiday ready!
10. You’ve booked your holiday! Next up; book your alarm service.
Regular maintenance keeps your in alarm in tip top condition. Back up batteries keep systems working for up to 8 hours during a power cut so you’ll be reassured to know that battery checks are part and parcel of the servicing package. According to a report in the Telegraph, 4/5 criminals said a house alarm would have deterred them from targeting the property. 9. Have you downloaded a holiday count down app?
It’s a good idea to check your CCTV app is up to date for remote viewing. Book a service of your CCTV system to make sure your app is up to date and you system is showing the correct time, the cameras are clean and the system is working at it’s best. A panel of former criminals told the Guardian that burglars are most likely to be put off breaking into homes by CCTV cameras. If you haven’t got CCTV yet, you can get a free quote here. Remember to leave your wifi ON for remote viewing whilst you’re on holiday. 
8. Will you be collecting keys to your accommodation?
What will you do with keys for your own home? It’s a good idea to appoint “key holders”; Ask a trusted family member or friend to look after a key. They could even receive your security alerts if you’re having a “switched off” holiday. If you have a monitored system, make sure all the key holder details are up to date. Give the key holders emergency numbers like ours in case they need help.
7. Are you looking forward to exploring a new area on holiday?
Before you go, take a look around your own property. Make sure any gates are locked and that your boundaries are secure. Consider installing perimeter security to receive alerts when anyone enters the garden or driveway.
6. How hot will your holiday destination be?

5. Is it time yet?
We’re halfway through the holiday countdown. It’s time to think about the finer details. Use timers on lights give an impression of someone being home. Make sure outside lights are working and garden areas are trimmed to eliminate dark areas where intruders could be hidden from plain site.
4. Are you looking forward to the break from the 9-5 routine?
Make sure your other routines don’t give you away. The milkman is making a comeback as many people, including us, switch away from plastic. When you’re away remember to cancel your milk & newspaper deliveries. Consider the letterbox; if your front door has any glass then perhaps a trusted keyholder (see number 8!) could move your post away from the doormat? Ask a trusted neighbour to put out your bins – and bring them back in.

Make sure all your doors and windows are locked, cars and vans are left empty and secure and keys are away from the doors and windows, in a safe place.
2. Social security
There’s a huge temptation to tell everyone about what an amazing time you’re having on holiday. The best security advice is to resist this. According to Metro, 78% of burglars use social media channels to decide who to target. This figure might make you think twice before you “check-in”. If you can’t wait to upload your beach photos with the best filters then at least make sure your security settings are locked down.
