We’ve been installing home security systems for four decades. In that time, we’ve provided peace of mind to over 21,000 customers! We’ve also helped answer a lot of home security questions. The one thing people ask us time and time again is:

What is the best way to secure my home and family?

So we’ve put together our top 5 home security tips:

Our Top 5 Home Security Tips

Tip #1: Set your house alarm

Many houses already have an alarm installed. Make sure you’re regularly using yours – set it whenever you’re out and at bed time too. Burglar alarms can be set up to only set certain areas during bedtime hours, or can be adapted to be pet friendly. Often we hear from people who have moved into a new home with an alarm that they don’t know how to use, or that isn’t compatible with their family life. We help them re-programme the system to work for them and protect their home and family.

If your house don’t have an alarm, it’s a worthwhile investment.

Tip #2: Lock the door to intruders

It sounds obvious but a scary 25% of people leave their doors unlocked. Lock them when you’re at home too to avoid sneak in theft. Windows are also often left unsecured and create an easy access point for burglars – this is particularly notable as we head into spring and (hopefully!) some warmer weather.

Make sure your locks are up to standards. You can get advice on this from neighbourhood watch groups. Many people are opting to install doorbell cameras or CCTV cameras which provide an extra level of protection in doorways and have been found to deter criminals. Cameras can alert you to anyone on the doorstep and allow you to deal with visitors without actually going to the door if you feel vulnerable.

Tip #3: Think outside the … house!

Home security isn’t just what’s on the inside – or even around the shell (ie doors and windows). Thinking about what is outside your house can help to keep your home secure. Security cameras are often cited as the best deterrent and the quality of systems now available means that CCTV doesn’t just record crime, it provides quality evidence should it be required.

Tidying away tools and bikes can remove temptation. Again this is something to consider in the warmer months. You can easily add security systems to shed and outbuildings. The car defender can also be used to protect bikes and tools.

The car defender is a popular product, protecting your vehicle on the drive, your bike in the shed or your tools in the garage. It works by connecting wirelessly to your home alarm and triggering a smart response from your security system if anyone tampers with your property.

Tip #4: Social security

Most of us love to share our travels and adventures with friends and family. Do you check in from your holidays and splash photos on social media? Our advice here is to firstly double check all your social media account settings to make sure you know who can see what you’re posting. And secondly we always recommend that you wait to post the pictures when you’re back at home. Checking in and sharing pictures when you’re away on holiday advertises that your home is empty, and if it is picked up by the wrong people it can have disastrous consequences.

Alongside your social apps, using an app for your home security will notify you of any activity or activation at home. These apps are available for CCTV and intruder alarms alike.

Tip #5: Make sure your house doesn’t look like the easy target

If you only take one thing from this blog take this tip:

Make sure your house doesn’t look like the east target. Opportunists look for easy pickings and more experienced criminals can spot a dummy camera and know the difference between a monitored alarm and a DIY bell box.

Put obvious up to date security measures in place. Check that your garden doesn’t provide cover for criminals. Don’t leave desirable items on display.
